Silver can be extracted from lead ores in large furnaces through a process called cupellation. In this method, the lead containing silver is heated in the presence of air so that the lead oxidizes and separates, leaving behind purified silver. This technique has been used for centuries and remains effective for ores where silver occurs as an impurity within lead rich minerals.

Most silver, however, is extracted from its ores using a froth flotation process. In this modern approach, the crushed ore is mixed with water and specific reagents that make silver bearing minerals hydrophobic. Air is then introduced, creating bubbles to which these minerals attach. The bubbles rise to the surface carrying concentrated silver particles, which are collected as a mineral rich froth. The resulting concentrate is further refined through smelting, chemical leaching, or electrolysis to produce high purity silver used in electronics, photovoltaics, jewelry, medical instruments, and industrial applications.
